Job Summary

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE RN) provides timely, accurate and compassionate clinical assessment and care, intervention and documentation for patients that have been sexually assaulted. These responsibilities include but are not limited to a forensic examination, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, developing a safety plan before patients discharge, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up and support and participation in legal proceeding while maintaining chain of custody. Collaborates with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, solicitors, protective services, advocates and other agencies as needed. Serves as resource to hospital staff regarding sexual assault patients while at work.


After hire, completetion of SANE-A (adolescent/adult) class including the 40 hour didactic training and all clinical requirements associated with SANE-A training.


This job requires staff to be scheduled for a significant amount of on-call work including eve/nights, weekends and holidays.

This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.
Minimum Education

Associate's Degree- Nursing

Minimum Experience

1 year- Nursing; SANE experience preferred

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses
Specific Acceptable Credentials (if applicable)

Preferred - SANE-A (Lawson code RN78) and/or SANE-P (Lawson Code RN79) Certification

In lieu of the Above Minimum Requirements


Other Required Experience

Able to maintain expertise and current knowledge in performing sexual assault exams, forensic gynecology, trauma related issues, sexual assault case law and statutes, evidence collection procedures and emerging trends in forensic nursing. - Required

Demonstrate ability to evaluate, modify and adapt the plan of care based on data during collection of evidence. Demonstrate ability to change plan of care in regard to anonymous/mandated reporting. Demonstrate effective history taking skills, head to toe assessment, anogenital exam, specimen collection, packaging, sealing and proper chain of custody, and explaining necessary follow-up with discharge instructions for concerns after the assault. - Required

Able to implement critical thinking based on data when implementing crisis intervention strategies following a sexual assault. - Required

Able to react compassionately while being objective during collection of evidence. - Required
